Skullis is proud to be able to recreate and offer a new type of replica of Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull, which is a world famous, beautiful object of mystery and intrigue. This particular replica is smaller than the original, yet all dimensions are exactly proportional to the original Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull. This replica differs from the original by being a single piece sculpture which has been carved from the a solid specimen of this material. The lower jaw is stationary and not removable, being a fixed part carved of the same specimen as the crystal skull itself. This special Mitchell-Hedges replica makes this famous crystal skull more affordable, compared to the EXACT replicas Skullis offers, like the one that was filmed in the National Geographic Channel documentary, which are at least 5 times the price of this replica.
One of the most enigmatic and mysterious artifacts of all time, the Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull has been a source of both wonder and controversy since it was first presented to the world, elicitng a range of reactions from the people who have studied it which span from emphatic skepticism to ecstatic visionary and mystical experiences.
As the story goes, the skull was discovered in 1927 by British adventurer and explorer F.A. Mitchell-Hedges and his adopted daughter Anna, in the Mayan ruins at Lubaantun, in what was then British Honduras (present day Belize). Branded as the "Skull of Doom" by F.A. Mitchell-Hedges, it was purported that Mayan priests could will death with the skull, and a series of stories about the 'curse' of the skull unfolded over the next several years.
Soon after, as more and more people came to experience it first hand, the crystal skull began to be associated with potent healing energies, compelling visionary and intuitive experiences, connections to accessing ancient knowledge, and communications with spiritual, transdimensional, and otherworldly entities. Anna Mitchell-Hedges and the present caretaker of the skull, Bill Homann, renamed the crystal skull as the "Skull of Love."
Skeptics continue to remain unconvinced by these anecdotal accounts, but regardless of its caretaker or any 'magical' properties attributed to this artifact, stories of people having strange experiences in the presence of this skull stretch from the time of its discovery up to the present day.
Whether a believer or a skeptic, one must admit that this beautiful object holds a place of primal fascination in the minds of millions. The crystal skull is the ultimate paradoxical symbol of our material impermanence: the human skull, wrought from one of the most spiritual and permanent of materials: quartz crystal.
It has been speculated that the skull was carved by the Ancient Mayans, by Atlanteans, or even extra-terrestrial beings. If it was in fact carved by man, it is believed to have taken from 150 to 300 years to complete. As one of the Hewlett Packard crystallographers said himself after studying the skull in 1970, "The damn thing shouldn't even be!" Even using today's most sophisticated technology, experts have stated time and time again that this mysterious artifact would be impossible for modern humans to reproduce. Impossible that is, at least, until now.
After untold hours of research, study, and carving, Skullis achieved the impossible! The top artists at Skullis Studios have reproduced the famous Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull to the exact specifications of the original.
The documentarians from the National Geographic Channel provided Skullis with the official size and weight measurements of the Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull as determined by The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Striving for perfection, Skullis scoured the internet for every available photograph, video, and written description, and also acquired every DVD available featuring the famous crystal skull, from its original appearance on Arthur C. Clarke's "Mysterious World" to more recent documentaries including the Smithsonian Institute/BBC documentary on the subject of crystal skulls, a SyFy Channel documentary, and videos sold as meditation aides by the crystal skull's present caretaker, Bill Homann.
Proportionally accurate in every detail, Skullis assiduously reproduced the Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull, using both the official measurements taken by Frank Dorland at the Hewlett Packard crystal laboratory, where the Mitchell-Hedges skull was first subjected to rigorous scientific testing in 1970, and the detailed measurements taken by Skullis' team of top artists and designers from the high quality DVD images of various angles of the skull and lower jaw, to ensure the highest degree of accuracy possible in proportionately recreating every feature of the original. Many months and several iterations later, Skullis finally achieved what the experts said could not be done. Skullis successfully and accurately recreated the most enigmatic lapidary masterpiece of all time!
Skullis Studios regularly offers the Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull replicas carved from quality quartz crystal specimens as well as various other materials including rose quartz, pyrite, obsidians, and many others. These replicas are offered in many sizes, including smaller versions, exact crystal skulls that match the size of the original at a 1:1 ratio, and even larger sized sculptures. The majority of these crystal skulls are made with the famous removable lower jaw being carved from the same specimen of crystal or mineral as the skull itself.
For decades there was only one, the original crystal skull that began a worldwide movement toward our present fascination and love of crystal skulls. Now, thanks to the amazing abilities of the designers and artists of Skullis, and their experience born from generations of stone carving, it is possible for people around the world to experience this fascinating and timeless works of crystal skull art in their own homes!
