The War God Skull, carved from a nautiloid fossil from Madagascar, stands battle ready, armored in his ancient helmet. The War God Skull mounts on a highly polished black obsidian stand to complete the presentation of an outstanding work of fine art. The attention to detail and consideration for the overall effect of this sculpture is remarkable. Not only has the interior been hollowed to allow one to see through the eye sockets, but along with the meticulous details of the skull itself, even the nose guard of the War God Skull’s helmet is true to how it should be; the bridge is raised off the skull carved under and behind it. Possibly a member of the Cymatoceras genus, this beautiful fossil still retains its outer shell and displays wonderfully colorful bands of iridescent ammolite. Cymatoceratidae appeared about 174 million years ago and the Cymatoceras genus lived between 163.5 to 23 million years ago. As with our modern nautilus, the shell grew in a way that the outer whorl widens and envelops the previous turn of the shell.

More closely related to the modern chambered nautilus than octopi, cuttlefish, and squid, this very fine nautiloid fossil specimen was unearthed in Madagascar. It shows an excellent example of ammolite iridescence on the shell caused by interference with light that rebounds from stacked layers of the thin aragonite platelets that make up the shell. When the seas receded, the nautiloidea were buried by layers of sediment which preserved the aragonite of their shells, preventing them from converting to calcite.

In order to create jobs in the country, Madagascar export law requires that all fossils from Madagascar be polished or altered in some way. Fortunately most fossils are much more lovely after this process. Here do we not only have the wonderful sample of one of the very few organic gems, ammolite, but also behind the polished shell the interior of the nautiloid has been revealed to show the detailed growth pattern of the animal which has been replaced and preserved by calcite.
