Self Discovery is a fascinating concept which has been masterfully expressed in a blue ridge coral specimen from Hainan, China. A beautifully blue skeleton wields an 18 karat gold plated sterling silver hammer and chisel, using them to reveal and define itself from the interior of this organically created aragonite crystalline matrix. The Self Discovery blue coral crystal skull skeleton works diligently and with deliberate purpose toward grand aspirations, carving away, leaving a pile of rubble at its base. This inspiring sculpture displays on a custom designed black obsidian stand which, like the blue coral carving itself, is signed on the base by Skullis' master designer and artist Steven Z. The Self Discovery blue ridge coral crystal skull sculpture measures 2.5 x 5.6 x 7.5 inches (64x142x190 mm) and the oval black obsidian stand measures 2.9"x4.6"x1.7"(73x116x43 mm). The total weight of the Self Discovery sculpture is 3.22 pounds (1461 g).

The Self Discovery crystal skull sculpture demonstrates the certainty that each of us is inherently capable of deciding, and creating, our personal reality based on which of our feelings, beliefs, and thoughts we invest our energy in. As well, Self Discovery also helps us to understand that collectively we are active co-creators of our shared world, acting to inspire each of us to recognize the importance of employing our love based and heart centered awareness to design and manifest a world that allows for every individual to experience the greatest good that is their highest potential.

Self Discovery also encourages the exploration of our connectedness to our Earth mother, helping us to understand our synergistic relationship with all other people, with the environments of our world, and with every expression of life that we share our home with. The Self Discovery crystal skull shows us that if we redirect our perceptions to view the world and our interactions with it from our hearts, we can repair the damage that has been created by the individuals who are only viewing their lives through their egos.

Self Discovery helps us to take an introspective look at our own lives and who we have become based on our past decisions. The Self Discovery blue ridge crystal skull skeleton sculpture with its precious metal accessories encourages each of us to understand that if we do not approve of what we find, there is no obstacle or barrier that can prevent us from deciding to change our lives and bring to our physical existence our unbound and unlimited spiritual origin which is based in peace and love.

Heliopora coerulea is one of only two soft corals that produce a stony skeletal structure, the other being the red to maroon skeleton of Tubipora musica, more commonly referred to as the pipe organ coral. The blue ridge coral skeleton is formed from calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite.

In its natural habitat, Heliopora coerulea, the only member of its family, prefers splash zones and higher current locations, giving rise to the reference of it being a ridge coral. Often it inhabits the edges of reefs where wave action is tumultuous and more severe. It is actually a very hardy coral, but the living specimen is dramatically different than the skeleton, being a much less colorful creamy brown. When the coral polyps are recessed within the skeletal structure, the coral can have a magnificent porcelain like appearance, due to a shiny effect of the outer tissue, but as the polyps extend for photosynthesis and feeding opportunities, the overall effect changes to a bushy and softer appearance.

Heliopora coerulea is widespread throughout the Indo-Pacific region and is a fairly common coral in most places, however due to its preference for shallow water for the purpose of photosynthesis, it is much more susceptible to ocean acidification caused by run off pollutants, elevated ocean temperatures, and other detrimental factors that threaten its population.

All of our reefs are in danger: Localized threats to corals include fisheries, human development (industry, settlement, tourism, and transportation), changes in native species dynamics and invasive species (competitors, predators, pathogens and parasites), dynamite fishing, chemical fishing, pollution from agriculture and industry, domestic pollution, sedimentation, and human recreation and tourism activities.

CITES lists Heliopora coerulea as vulnerable. Blue ridge coral is protected in several marine reserves within its habitat range, and being quite adaptable it also lives and grows successfully in aquaria. Collection of wild specimens is controlled and limited. Skullis adheres to these restrictions and offers a few selected carvings made from material we have acquired from responsible suppliers. Of more than 6,600 items currently listed on Skullis.com, there are only 15 blue ridge coral sculptures, and only 4 of those are available for purchase! Though beautiful and desirable, it is not a material we stock on a regular basis.

It is the hope of Skullis that by offering this beautiful Self Discovery sculpture, a sense of responsibility and careful consideration will be inspired in every person to be conscious of the far reaching results of their activities, from the uses of chemicals that may eventually wind up in our oceans to the choices we make regarding our consumption of fossil fuels, the processes involved in growing the foods we purchase, and so on. In this instance, one person can affect the world, for better or for worse. Skullis intends to see our reefs recover from the disease and bleaching issues they now face, and to reestablish and thrive once more, stabilizing the many populations of ocean inhabitants for our own enjoyment now, and for that of the future generations to come.
