All the possible colors of this amazing stone are displayed in this single specimen. One of mookaite’s greatest characteristics is the way the many colors blend with each other, not only creating new colors and shades where they meet, but also somehow allowing the different colors to exist separately in the same place. Mookaite Jasper is a beautiful stone composed of cryptocrystalline fossilized opaline silica shells of radiolaria, a microscopic protozoa. Radiolaria first appeared in the fossil record at the very beginning of the Cambrian age, and they still exist today, forming beautifully intricate crystalline shells of silica or strontium sulfate, depending on the groups within their supergroup. The only known source of Mookaite is at Mooka Creek, located on the western side of the Kennedy Ranges in Western Australia.

Deposited on the ancient floors of shallow seas, and now compressed into solid rock, mookaite is only found in comparatively small areas of this sedimentary rock where silification has resulted in the development of cherts and porcellanites. Groundwater rich in varying concentrations of hematite and geothite particles has mottled the white stone with a spectacular array of colors, from very light pinks to red, magenta, deep crimson, intense purples, tans, browns, and a very grounded earthy yellow. The potential for all of these colors to be present in varying degrees in a specimen makes Mookaite a wonderful and very energetic stone.
