Tridacna gigas is the largest species of the giant clams, and is, in fact, the largest species of bivalve mollusk in the fossil record. The Tridacna gigas giant clams live in shallow areas of the tropical biogeographic oceanic region known as the Indo-Pacific, which includes the central and western Pacific Ocean, the seas surrounding Indonesia, and the tropical portion of the Indian Ocean. Tridacna gigas lives mainly on sandy or rubble covered sea beds down to a depth of 66 feet (20m), sharing in a symbiotic relationship with single cell zooxanthellae algae cultures that live within the tissue of the clam. The giant clam extends its often spectacularly colorful mantle out to allow the algae to utilize sunlight that penetrates into the ocean waters for photosynthesis.

Skullis has produced very few crystal skulls from the calcium carbonate based calcite shells of these giant clams. The Tridacna gigas giant clam is listed as a vulnerable species due to bivalve fishing for food purposes and the aquarium trade. However, the Australian government, having recognized the importance of preserving the giant clams, funded an aquaculture project for several species of giant clams, especially T. gigas, on an large scale in 1985. (This year also marks the time when new technologies began to allow the salt water reef aquarium hobby to become a viable pursuit for the hobbyist.) That initial project lead to the development of clam farms in the Pacific Islands and the Philippines, creating work and income for people in those areas, and raising a great number of giant clam specimens which could be offered in the aquarium trade and also be reintroduced into the wild. Most often, an aquacultured T. gigas is a superior choice for the dealer and aquarist, compared to a wild caught specimen, as the chances of death during transfer and acclimation and the likelihood of introducing disease and parasites into the home aquarium are both greatly reduced. Compared to the majority of marine animals, clams and corals are quite easy to farm, and a business far from any ocean can do quite well, which translates into lower costs. It is simply not as profitable to collect and ship wild T. gigas for the aquarium industry.

The Tridacna gigas is an incredibly beautiful animal with an average life span of more than 100 years. They can reach a length of 47 inches (120cm) and weigh over 440 pounds (200kg). The largest known specimen was discovered along the north western coast of Sumatra in 1817. Its shell is now displayed in a museum in Northern Ireland, both halves measuring 4.49 feet (137cm) across and weighing 510 pounds (230kg). The shell of T. gigas is considered a non-nacreous calcium carbonate which is calcite based, rather than the nacre found in many oysters, abalone, and snails. The shell is described as porcellaneous due to its lustrous appearance which resembles porcelain.

Shells provide a connection to the water element and the moon, and so to the emotions. Shells enhance intuition and sensitivity providing mental clarity and insight to assist with decision making. Shells possess a pliant and easy healing energy that gradually increases in intensity to become quite powerful and effective. This characteristic is effective not only for healing, but also for conveying messages within one's self, between people and in groups, and with the spiritual planes. Shells are wonderful tools for manifestation and transformation. They can provide one with the ability to adapt to changes and increase one's spiritual power to bring happiness, prosperity, and fulfillment, and allow for the expression of one's imagination and creativity. Shells are naturally inclined to provide protection for the home, travelers, small children and pets, for the emotions, and from uncooperative attitudes and actions of the self and others. Shells can be used to enhance energies and to assist one in meditation, decision making, and in exploring alternate realms of existence. Shells encourage cooperation and cohesion for groups, for individuals, and for the self.

Shell can be used for skeletal issues, broken bones, proper utilization of calcium and vitamins A and D, and bringing optimal health to the spinal canal, brain, and the blood, lymphatic, immune, and nervous systems.
