Brilliantly conceived, this massive coral has been carefully hollowed in keeping with the jack-o'-lantern tradition. An opening at the bottom allows for a light or candle to be placed inside, completing this wonderful white coral jack-o'-lantern sculpture. Coral King Jack is a sizeable work of art, measuring 8.7 x 7.7 x 5.9 inches (220x195x150 mm) and weighing 5.8 pounds (2621g). Coral King Jack is intended to serve the same purpose as all jack-o'-lanterns. Traditionally, Halloween, also known as All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve, is the one day of the year when the spirits of the dead return to the Earth. During the early 1800's, the people of Ireland, Scotland, and Britain would carve monstrous, scary, and comical faces in various root vegetables. The carvings were hollowed and lit from within with a candle. These jack-o'-lanterns were used to protect homes and families by scaring and warding off malevolent spirits. In contrast, sweets were put out to welcome the visiting spirits of family and loved ones.
